Some New (To Me) Tools from the PAST Show

At the end of January, I went to the PAST tool collectors show in Fremont, CA.  Usually I don't come home with anything, but this time I did grab a few things.  I'll show them below, but first let me show this router plane display that one of the guys brought!

None of these planes was made by Stanley or Preston or Millers Falls, or any other maker that we typically think of when we think of router planes.  These were mostly user-made tools and they were pretty dang cool.  The longest one was 14" long.

On the same table was also a display of an unusual Disston saw - a #196 "docking" saw.

There's nothing about it on the Disstonian Institute site, but some other search results indicated it was used for heavy construction, like timber framing or railroad work.  It has crosscut teeth and a heavily breasted tooth line.  Someone at the tool show suggested the name came from its use on the docks, perhaps crosscutting dock boards to length.  The metal handle was interesting - possibly due to its getting rough use.

Anyway, moving on to what I picked up ...

A couple years ago I bought two larger auger bits - 1 1/8" and 1 1/4".  I found a 1 1/2" bit at the show and grabbed it for $10.  It's a Snell's-Jennings bit, no idea when it was made, but it was in near perfect condition.  It was already sharp - both spurs and both cutting lips.  And when I got home and made a test hole I was very impressed at how clean the entry rim was.  This was a great find because I have had some trouble using expansive bits for larger holes.

I'm a sucker for incannel gouges.  One of the sellers had a table where everything was $8.  There was a box filled with chisels of all types and I grabbed four - two small incannel gouges (that will add nicely to the larger ones I've got), a bent gouge, and a 1" bevel edge chisel.

The two incannel gouges were from Spear & Jackson and New Haven Edge Tool Co.  I just need to clean and sharpen them and I think they'll be a great addition to my shop.

The bent gouge is from Ulmia.  It's 13 mm wide with an approximate 1/4" radius curvature.  I don't do much carving, but this one will be a nice addition to the carving set.

Finally, there was this 1" socket chisel.  I don't need another 1" chisel, but this one is a T. H. Witherby.  If their chisels are as good as I've heard their drawknives are, this will be a real winner!  It's got a little pitting on the flat side, but I think I'll be able to get that out.  I found a good article about Witherby by Brian Welch here.

Rehabing Orvil's Chisels, Part 2

I remember a few years ago when I first saw the "London-pattern" chisel handles.  I thought they looked so dang good.  And I love the fact that they don't tend to roll off the bench.  Orvil's chisels needed some classy handles, so I did some research on the London pattern.

I didn't have a clue about what diameter to start with, what overall length to shoot for, how long the octagonal section should be, how long the curvy section should be, etc.  The interwebs provided some clues and I made some assumptions to make a couple prototypes.

The larger one above started from a 1 1/4" square piece, so it was 1 1/4" flat-to-flat in the octagonal section.  From the top (largest part) of the taper to the back end was 5 1/2".  The smaller one was 1 3/16" flat-to-flat and 5" long.

I liked the diameter of the large one for the 1 1/2"chisel, but it seemed a bit too long.

At the same time that I was trying to figure out all this stuff, Ralph over at the Accidental Woodworker blog had bought some London pattern handles.  He was nice enough to post some dimensions of his handles for me here (thanks, Ralph).

This was a good reality check that I was in the ballpark.  I was bang-on with my choice of square blanks to start with, but I was a bit off in some other dimensions.  The main difference for my handles was that, rather than make a large handle for the largest chisel, medium handles for the 5/8" to 1" chisels and small handles for the 1/4" to 1/2" chisels, I wanted to make progressively smaller handles as the chisel size got smaller.  So I worked out some numbers and got started.

First was to square up some blanks and then take them to octagonal.  My method uses a spreadsheet to tell me where to mark lines on the blank based on it square size.  The Incra rule is great for this.

The first thing to do is to turn the taper for the socket - without a good fit everything else is meaningless.

Inserting the taper into the socket and twisting a bit shows where more material needs to be removed.  There were a lot of iterations of turning and fitting to get them right.  This was complicated for some of them because some were not round.  The socket shown a few pics above was oval - about 1/32" out of round.  Others had large scratches or other metal anomalies inside the tapers or at the opening - just to make it less easy for me.  I had wondered if anybody purposely made scratches on the inside to grab the wooden handle better.

I did a little filing of these things to help the tapers fit the sockets better.

For the turning, I used one of my prototypes as a guide for general shape of the curved area.

And after three coats of BLO, here they are.  The handles for the four largest chisels are made from red oak, the rest from maple.

A note to self here: because some of the sockets were marred or out-of-round, I made a small mark on the handles to indicate which side of the octagon is parallel to the bevel edged side of the chisel.  That way, if I ever need to take the handle off (or if it comes off on it's own), I can put it back in the same orientation.  Otherwise, the interior scratches might wear the taper over time and result in a poor fit.

And finally, I needed to update my chisel rack for these.  I don't want them banging around in a drawer and I want them to be my daily users, so they needed to be easy to get to.  My chisel rack is on the back of a rolling cabinet, very close to the workbench.

I have since added back the two Japanese saws to the right side of the cabinet.  Also, I enclosed the area below the chisels so that no curious little hands or paws can accidentally brush against sharp edges.

I'm stoked about the new handles.  I feel like I'm finally giving Orvil's tools the respect they deserve.  I've been using them and have been loving it!

Rehabing Orvil's Chisels, Part 1

Ever since I became the new caretaker of Orvil's chisels, I wanted to clean them up and make new handles for them.  And having made my lathe recently, I could finally do it.

These chisels had gone through some rough use.  All the handles were reinforced with steel ferrules at the back end.  The ferrules were heavily peened over from who-knows-how-many steel hammer blows.  Many of the handles were cracked or broken.

The thing I don't understand is that Orvil Heft was a carver and painter of wooden birds.  It's hard for me to imagine that he needed these heavy-use chisels.  Perhaps he collected them and didn't use them.  Or maybe he had other woodworking interests besides birds.  But whatever the case, I wanted to make them nice again to be used every day.

To keep this post from getting too long, I'll go over the rework of the metal parts.  Next time I'll write about re-handling the chisels.

Removing the old handles was fairly easy.  Some were already loose, but some needed several raps on the benchtop to loosen them.  I took sandpaper to the metal - 180 grit and 220 grit.

I was careful to go lightly over the logos.  I learned that lesson a couple years ago on a saw that I cleaned up and almost obliterated the etch.  Never again ...

When they were clean enough, I flattened the backs.  This went faster than I thought it might, thanks in part to the extra-coarse diamond stone that I got last year.  But it did take a fair amount of time, especially for the wide chisels.  Every one had low spots at the edges, possible due to being flattened on dished stones earlier in life.

Every one of these chisels was severely dull.  The 7/8" chisel had a big chip off one corner.  The 1/2" chisel had been rounded at the cutting edge.  And I'll get into the 1/4" chisel a little later.  All needed to be ground back to get past the rounded-over corners of the cutting edge.

... but this came at a price - there was a lot of material to remove to grind a new edge
OK, about that 1/4" chisel.  The leading edge had been ground to be 3/16" wide and the grinding started about 3/4" back from the leading edge.  I thought for a long time about what to do.  I really didn't want to remove 3/4" of usable metal and throw the length out of whack with the rest of the chisels.  My other option was to make this chisel into a 3/16" chisel.  I didn't have a 3/16" chisel, so that's what I did.

I'm not set up to do metal work.  But I went for it anyway.  Lacking layout fluid, I used a Sharpie marker to blacken the flat side and the bevel side near one edge.

On the first side I did, I tried to file straight across.  But on the second side, I filed "skyward" from both directions to leave a peak in the middle.

Then I marked the edges and filed the middle, trying not to remove the black marker all the way to the edges.
 After the filing, I took the sides to the diamond stones, getting progressively finer with each stone.  This gave a much better finish to the sides, but I had over-filed a few spots that will stay looking not-so-good.

This worked out pretty well.  I got within a few thousandths of 3/16" at the business end and I'm a few more thousandths over as I go further from the cutting edge.  I can live with that.
